Book Sale Volunteer

Job Description: Helping set up tables and arrange boxes of books. Consolidating and replenishing supplies and stock. Breaking down tables and cleaning up the program room. Volunteers must have the ability to lift and move heavy boxes weighing at least 40lbs, be friendly, helpful and have an organized demeanor, an ability to work in a fast paced environment and flexibility to assist with various tasks during their shift.   

Purpose: The purpose of the Book Sale Volunteer is to help library staff before, during, and after our Annual Book Sale.

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities: The Assistant Director determines what help is needed for our annual book sale. Tasks will vary depending on the requirements of the book sale. 

The following is a list of activities that a volunteer may be asked to assist with:

  • Set-up and clean-up
  • Welcome attendees
  • Consolidating and replenishing supplies and stock

Skill Development: Library volunteers may be assisted in the development of skills related to the area in which they volunteer. These skills may include:

  • Interpersonal relations.
  • Library practices and procedures.

Upon completion of training and a reasonable time on task, volunteers must be able to retain procedures and perform tasks independently with limited supervision.

While on duty, volunteers serve as representatives of The Allerton Public Library District and, to this end, must present and conduct themselves in a positive, friendly, and helpful manner to the general public, fellow volunteers, and library staff.

Time Commitment & Scheduling: Volunteers have the option to help with set up starting at 10:45am on the Thursday the book sale starts. Consolidating and replenishing supplies and stock during the book sale, and breaking down the book sale starting at 9:00am on the Monday after it ends. Book Sale set up takes around 4 to 5 hours. Book Sale break down takes around 3 to 4 hours. We would need at least a 1 hour time commitment from volunteers. 

    Volunteer Screening Process: In addition to meeting the qualifications listed above, volunteers must agree to abide by library and program guidelines and successfully complete a volunteer screening process which may include:

    • Volunteer application
    • Volunteer interview
    • Criminal background check (for volunteers ages 18+)

    Volunteer Supervision: A library staff member will be identified as the volunteer coordinator. This supervisor will be responsible for screening and scheduling volunteers, initiating and monitoring the volunteer training process, and problem solving any issues or concerns volunteers may have. All library staff members are available to answer questions or provide volunteer support on a day-to-day basis.

    Volunteer Training: Volunteers will be provided with basic orientation and on-the-job training for the tasks involved.

    Personal Appearance / Dress Code: As a representative of The Allerton Public Library District, we request volunteers report for their volunteer shift appropriately groomed and attired. The volunteer coordinator will communicate specific location requirements.

    Volunteer Badges: Volunteers are requested to wear the provided ‘volunteer’ badge while on duty.

    Service Hour Reporting: Volunteers are responsible for tracking the time they volunteer.
