Sensory Room
Allerton Public Library's sensory room is a trial service that offers library users a variety of private sensory space options.
WHAT IS A SENSORY ROOM?
A sensory room is a curated space to meet unique sensory needs. A sensory room can be active for sensory seekers, calming for sensory-avoiders, or a hybrid for those who have a range of sensory needs.
WHO CAN USE THE SENSORY ROOM?
Any library user 18 years or older can reserve a time in the sensory room. Caregivers must stay in the room with users under the age of 16.
- Reservations must be made at least 3 days in advance in order to give staff enough time to set up the space. Same day or next day reservations are not an option.
- A reservation request is not a guarantee of a room reservation. Reservations cannot conflict with another scheduled library program. The Youth Services Coordinator or Library Director will contact the individual to finalize the details.
AVAILABILITY
Sunday - 1:00pm to 2:00pm
Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm
SENSORY ROOM USE
- The reservation must include the first and last name of all individuals using the sensory space. Listed individuals cannot use the sensory space more than once per week. It can only be reserved 4 times a month.
- The sensory room can have no more than 5 people in it at the time. This includes caretakers and users. All individuals must be listed on the initial sensory space request.
- The sensory space can be reserved for 30 minutes to 1 hour once per week, no more than one month in advance.
- The sensory room is available on Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and Sunday from 1:00pm to 2:00pm with a reservation.
Individuals must check in with the circulation desk before entering the room. A library staff member will unlock the room and let them in. Once the individual’s time is up, they must let the circulation desk know that they have finished with the room and are leaving.

- Up to five people can be in the sensory room at a time.
- Reservations are only for the person who makes the reservation and any guests they name.
- Guests under 16 years old must have a caretaker with them.
- All drinks must be covered. Light snacks are allowed. Exceptions will be made for medical or dietary needs.
- The room cannot be used for professional therapy without the approval of the library.
- Individuals must let a library worker know if any of the room’s contents are broken or not working.
- Please return the room to the way you found it and inform the circulation desk that you are finished with the room and you are leaving.
