Programming Volunteer

Purpose: The purpose of the Programming Volunteer is to help library staff before, during, and after scheduled programs.

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities: The volunteer coordinator determines what help is needed on an ongoing basis. Tasks will vary depending on the requirements and schedule of the programs being offered.

The following is a list of activities that a volunteer may be asked to assist with:

  • Welcome attendees.
  • Set-up and clean-up.
  • Prepare program materials (examples – craft supplies, handouts).
  • Encourage participant engagement.
  • Demonstrate and monitor activities (examples – crafts, games, songs).
  • Facilitate group discussions.

Volunteer Qualifications, Skills, & Abilities: Program support volunteers need to possess the skills and physical ability to perform assigned tasks. These skills include:

  • English language comprehension (unless specified otherwise).
  • Basic mobility.

Upon completion of training and a reasonable time on task, volunteers must be able to retain procedures and perform tasks independently with limited supervision.

While on duty, volunteers serve as representatives of The Allerton Public Library District and, to this end, must present and conduct themselves in a positive, friendly, and helpful manner to the general public, fellow volunteers, and library staff.

Skill Development: Library volunteers may be assisted in the development of skills related to the area in which they volunteer. These skills may include:

  • Interpersonal relations.
  • Library practices and procedures.

Time Commitment & Scheduling: This is an on demand volunteer position for programs that we anticipate will have a higher attendance rate or a more complicated activity.

Volunteer Screening Process: In addition to meeting the qualifications listed above, volunteers must agree to abide by library and program guidelines and successfully complete a volunteer screening process which may include:

  • Volunteer application
  • Volunteer interview
  • Criminal background check (for volunteers ages 18+)

Volunteer Supervision: A library staff member will be identified as the volunteer coordinator. This supervisor will be responsible for screening and scheduling volunteers, initiating and monitoring the volunteer training process, and problem solving any issues or concerns volunteers may have. All library staff members are available to answer questions or provide volunteer support on a day-to-day basis.

Volunteer Training: Volunteers will be provided with basic orientation and on the job training for the tasks involved.

Personal Appearance / Dress Code: As a representative of The Allerton Public Library District, we request volunteers report for their volunteer shift appropriately groomed and attired. The volunteer coordinator will communicate specific location requirements.

Volunteer Badges: Volunteers are requested to wear the provided ‘volunteer’ badge while on duty.

Service Hour Reporting: Volunteers are responsible for tracking the time they volunteer.

Allerton Public Library District Mission: Allerton Public Library District serves, connects, and enriches our community by providing resources and programs that inspire curiosity and promote lifelong learning.
